Was Jesus happy? It depends who you ask

Christianity is the dominant religion in both South Korea and the United States. But a new study finds that believers in these two cultures view the central figure of their religion quite differently.

Americans are more likely to associate Jesus Christ with positive terms such as “love” and “amazement” compared with South Koreans, who are more likely to associate the founder of Christianity with words like “sacrifice,” “blood” and “suffering.” The results held true for both Christians and non-Christians in each culture, according to study researcher Shigehiro Oishi, a psychologist at the University of Virginia.

“(I)t is clear that there is an interesting cultural difference in the image of Jesus,” Oishi and his graduate student Casey Eggleston wrote in a Society for Personality and Social Psychology blog post about the research. “The image of Jesus might be culturally constructed (to fit the existing ideal in a given culture), or it could be the reflection of individuals’ self-image.”

How cultures perceive fables, fairytales and fictional characters can highlight interesting differences in cultural attitudes, Oishi and his colleagues reported in February in the Journal of Research in Personality. For example, Aesop’s fable “The Ant and the Grasshopper” involves a well-prepared ant and an easy-going grasshopper that doesn’t store food for winter. In the American telling of this fable, the ant usually relents and shares its bounty with the irresponsible grasshopper. In the German version, the ant lets the grasshopper starve.

Thinking about Jesus
More than 80 percent of Americans and 41 percent of South Koreans are Christian, and all draw their faith from the same biblical descriptions of Jesus. Thus, Oishi and his colleagues figured that any differences in the way Americans and South Koreans see Jesus would likely be cultural.

The researchers had reason to suspect there might be differences: A former South Korean student of Oishi’s had mentioned to him that her American roommate thought Jesus was happy. The South Korean student thought that idea was absurd ? she assumed Jesus must have worried a lot.

So the researchers set up two experiments. In the first, they simply asked 71 European-American students and 59 South Korean students at an American university to write down the words that came to mind when they thought of Jesus. They found that Americans were much more chipper about Jesus than their South Korean counterparts. For example, about 3 percent of Americans mentioned pain or suffering on their list, compared with 15 percent of South Koreans.

In a second experiment, the researchers asked 83 South Korean students and 200 American students to fill out questionnaires that would get at major aspects of their personalities and happiness. They were then asked to fill out the same questionnaires for Jesus. Again, Americans viewed Jesus as happier, more agreeable, more extroverted, more open to experience and more conscientious (a trait related to responsibility and carefulness) than did South Koreans. Americans also rated themselves higher than South Koreans on traits such as life satisfaction, agreeableness, extroversion and openness to experience.

Culture and Christianity
It’s possible that these different views of Jesus arise from different conceptions of Christianity, Oishi wrote. South Korean culture is traditionally family-focused, with an emphasis on forgoing one’s own needs for the needs of relatives. That could result in an emphasis on Jesus’ sacrifices. Cultural factors determine an “ideal” personality, Eggleston told LiveScience, and that ideal could then be transferred onto Jesus, who was, after all, supposed to be the perfect model of humanity.

It’s also possible that Americans simply view themselves as happier than South Koreans, so they project their own happiness onto Jesus, the researchers wrote.

“Perhaps none of (the) cultural representations of Jesus is complete, but at the same time not incorrect ways of understanding who he is,” Oishi wrote. “In the end, examining and understanding multiple faces of Jesus could help us to understand both religion and culture just a little bit better.”

The Colorado Creative Industries (CCI), a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, is hosting its inaugural Summit, Thursday and Friday at the DoubleTree hotel in Breckenridge. The event is titled Cultivating Common Ground and features a convening of artist-entrepreneurs, owners of creative sector businesses and nonprofit cultural workers for two days of presentations, discussions and workshops. Attendees will network with fellow creatives from around the state. The Summit is also a first step to discovering how the state of Colorado can work with for-profit art entities, instead of just non-profits, according to CCI Summit project coordinator Kim Harrell.

Day one opens with a keynote luncheon featuring Colorado?s Matt Morris, who collaborates with Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson and Beyonce. The day wraps up with an exclusive art walk in the Historic District. The second day features more than a dozen professional development workshops and culminates with the Governor?s Arts Award luncheon, with live music by Scott McCormick?s new band Lee Avenue. This year?s Governor?s Arts Award is shared by the Town of Carbondale and the City of Lafayette, and both mayors will be present to receive the award, a commissioned painting by Colorado artist John Lintott.

The more than 35 speakers and panelists include: Daniel Junge, Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker; Alyson Stanfield, creative business coach/

writer; Birgitta De Pree, actor/theatre educator; Scott Aller, business development manager for 5280Live/Ticketmaster; LeVar Battle, writer, community curator and digital strategist; Jolt, public artist; Leanne Goebel, art writer, critic and journalist; Dave Ratner, entertainment attorney; and Donald Zuckerman, Colorado Film Commissioner.

Registration for the Summit includes all meals and workshops. Early registration is $95 through today and then increases to $105; $75 for students. Attendees may also attend only the Governor?s Arts Award Luncheon for $30. Hotel accommodations are available at the DoubleTree and can be booked by calling (888) 355-6318, group coupon code G23. CCI was established July 2010, merging the former Colorado Council on the Arts, the Office of Film, Television and Media, and the state?s Art in Public Places program.

Passover Inspiration with 12 Tribes Kosher Foods ? Bay Area Bites …

Happy Passover! What are you cooking? Passover, even more than Thanksgiving, is a home and family holiday. Of course, there are restaurants doing Seder-inspired meals; in San Francisco, Passover at Delfina brings their Edible Seder Plate, Stoll Family Matzoh Balls, and other Italian-Jewish specialties, all much anticipated by regulars. This year, they’ll be serving matzoh made by their former sous-chef, Brad Joffe, who now runs Beauty’s Bagels in Oakland, source of the excellent weekend bagels at Wise Sons. (And by the way, pastrami lovers, Wise Sons is closed for Passover; they’ll re-open on Sunday, April 15.)

Firefly has a delish-sounding brisket and root-vegetable tsimmes on this week’s menu, along with a spring vegetable plate with matzoh kugel and yellowfoot-mushroom sauce. (And for those who don’t mind a little trayf, don’t worry, they’ve still got the shrimp-and-scallop dumplings on the menu.)

But for many of us, Passover is a time to slow down, reconnect with family and friends over dinners at home, and pay attention to what we’re eating. Jewish dietary laws forbid the eating of grains during the 8-day holiday, especially anything yeasted or naturally leavened. So, no bread, no bagels, no pasta, no rice, just matzoh, a flat cracker that must be mixed and baked in less than 18 minutes, to prevent any natural rising of the dough from occurring. So, much kvetching can be heard this week from toast-lovers like myself, and, for those with a sweet tooth, a whole lot of dependance on ground nuts and matzoh meal in lieu of flour, plus whisked egg whites for fluffiness.

However, Rebecca Joseph, rabbi and owner of 12 Tribes Kosher Foods, a kosher catering and prepared-meals business, looks at the holiday’s restrictions with abundance in mind.

“What I suggest to people who say that they dread the holiday because they can’t eat bread is to think of this as a time to celebrate freedom from habitual food choices or ways of eating that may be less than optimally healthful. Also, when we focus on all the things we can eat, especially early spring produce, then Passover meals can be really delicious and seasonal.”

Joseph describes her Orange Custard recipe, below, as “a very easy dessert (no separating eggs or weird ingredients involved) that’s a great break from nuts and matzoh meal. It’s also parve (containing neither meat nor dairy), so it’s good for people who are lactose intolerant, gluten-free and/or have nut sensitivities.”

For those of you, like myself, who have had egg-separating spongecake disasters, this recipe couldn’t be simpler. Only three very basic ingredients, no whisking, no folding. A splash of orange-flower water would probably add a lovely perfumey touch. With the money you’re not spending on coconut macaroons in a can, get really fresh, gold-yolked eggs from happy, pasture-raised chickens. Joseph dresses her custard up with lightly toasted coconut shards, but you can also get crazy and let your guests dive into David Lebovitz’s toffee-licious Chocolate-Covered Caramelized Matzoh Crunch as well.

Recipe: Orange Custard
Recipe courtesy of 12 Tribes Kosher Foods

Made from just eggs, sugar, and orange juice, this easy dessert takes just a few minutes to put together. Unlike a typical baked custard, it contains no dairy, so it can served as dessert after a meat meal by those following kosher dietary laws.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30-35 minutes
Total Time: 40-45 minutes
Yield: 6 custards

Ingredients
5 large eggs
1/3 cup sugar
2 cups fresh orange juice

    Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 325? F. In a small pot, heat orange juice until lukewarm.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat the eggs with a fork until well blended. Beat in the sugar. To produce a smooth, creamy custard, the mixture should be well combined, but not frothy. Slowly add the orange juice, beating to combine.
  3. Pour 1/2 cup of the custard mixture into each of 6 ramekins. Place the ramekins in a large pan and pour enough boiling water into the pan to come about halfway up the sides of the ramekins.
  4. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until just set. Remove the ramekins from the pan of hot water. Cool for 30 minutes, then refrigerate. Serve chilled.
  5. Serves 6.

Livin' The DREAM? GOP Hopes To Win Latinos With New Version …

The Republican Party has a Latino problem. Polls make it clear that months of bitter presidential primary fights over immigration ? and a string of immigrant-crackdown legislation from Republican-controlled legislatures ? have left the GOP out in the cold when it comes to the growing Latino electorate.

A telling sign of how the party has approached a growing electorate the GOP under President George W. Bush thought would one day become an important part of the Republican base: Some activists believe the party has scaled-down its ambitions from hoping to woo Latinos to simply hoping they?re too apathetic to vote for Democrats.

Not all Republicans are pessimistic, however: Republican superstar Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has made a habit of trying to convince the GOP it?s time to Etch-A-Sketch away its recent rhetoric on immigration and get back to persuading Latinos to vote Republican. To that end, Rubio?s leading the charge for a Republican-friendly version of the DREAM Act.

President Obama is a strong supporter of the Democratic version of the DREAM Act, which would provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who serve in the military or get an education in America. Rubio?s version of the law would reportedly swap the citizenship guarantee for a sort-of permanent residency structure that would put eligible illegal immigrants in the long line for a chance at legal immigration through existing means.

Mitt Romney has said he?d veto the Democratic DREAM Act as president, a stance that Latino activists say is key to his problems with the Hispanic vote. (Other highlights of those conversations include the words ?Kris Kobach? and ?self-deportation.?) Romney hasn?t said what he?d do with Rubio?s version of the DREAM Act ? which hasn?t been revealed in its entirety ? but the law would give Republicans cover on the idea that they?re anti-DREAM, which puts them at odds with public opinion. Romney has indicated in the past, though, that he supports the idea of helping illegal immigrants who serve in the U.S. military, which gives him an opening to support Rubio?s bill.

Republicans think Rubio?s version of the law would give them the cover they need to make a credible run at the Latino vote.

?There?s an importance in going to the table and bringing up proposals and seeing what works best to fix the broken immigration system,? Alexandra Franceschi, a member of the of the Latino outreach team at the RNC, told TPM. ?And I think that Sen. Rubio is taking the step that you need to see from all the members ? that?s how it?s supposed to work.?

Latino Democrats say there?s no way the Rubio DREAM Act will change the perception of Romney or the GOP among Latino voters. In fact, they believe the ?citizenship-lite? version of the law could make matters worse for Republicans.

?Being a Latino, I know what it means to be second class, to be sort of accepted with an asterisk,? said Texas state Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer (D), chair of the state?s Mexican American Legislative Caucus. ?I don?t think Latinos of any stripe in the 21st century are going to say that, ?I am almost as good as somebody else.? And that?s really what it boils down to.?

But putting any DREAM Act on the table ? however reflective of the core Republican base concern that amnesty for immigrants is a dire threat to America ? could change the perception that Republicans don?t care about the Latino vote. That could help the GOP leverage what Latino activists have said is a disappointment with Obama and Democrats.

Democratic Latinos have long rejected the idea that Democratic failures to produce meaningful immigration reform leaves any room for Republicans to make a play for the Latino vote. They say the damage has been done when it comes to the GOP. Now it?s up to the Democrats to leverage their advantage.

?There is no scenario in which the GOP nominee becomes the lesser of two evils on immigration or the whole range of issues critical to Latinos,? Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) told TPM. ?But the president can recapture some of the enthusiasm that existed in 2008 if he leans into the immigration issue and recommits himself to being the pro-legalization, pro-citizenship, pro-reform candidate and really fights.?

100 Years Ago: Loss of the Titanic

TITANIC DOOMED: A glancing collision with an iceberg popped open hull plating on several compartments of the ship (the “gash” was much smaller than depicted here). Image: SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, Vol. CVI, No. 17; April 27, 1912

April 1962

Space Race
?The success of Proj?ect Mercury?s first manned orbital flight on February 20 may have set the stage for international co-operation in the exploration of space, as well as demonstrating through the performance of the astronaut John H. Glenn, Jr., that men have a useful function in space vehicles. Glenn demonstrated that he could ?fly? the capsule, controlling its pitch, yaw and roll after malfunctions in the automatic system developed early in the flight. Glenn later said his exper?ience indicated ?that a man can take over control of the various systems.? In fact, he suggested, ?we probably can go on some future flights with considerably less auto?mation and less complexity.??

Nuclear Arsenals
?It is clear that military arguments alone are not likely to be dominant in U.S. discussion of a possible drastic first step toward nuclear disarmament. This is widely admitted in the U.S., where the impediments to disarmament are being seen more and more as economic, poli?tical and emotional in origin rather than as based on operational military consid?erations. A vital aspect of the problem for the U.S. is the effect that drastic disarm?ament steps would have not only on the economy as a whole but also on those special sections of high-grade, science-based and highly localized industries that are now so over?whelm?ingly involved in defense work.?

April 1912

Loss of the Titanic
?On Sunday, April 14th, the largest and sup?posedly the safest steamship afloat, while steaming on her proper course, on a clear, starlit night, struck an iceberg and within a few hours sank, carrying down with her over sixteen hundred souls. The technical lessons taught by this prodi?gious disaster are three: First, that the naval architect has not yet learned how to make an abso?lutely nonsinkable ship, and that proba?bly he never will. Second, that if every ship is sinkable, it should carry at least a sufficient number of lifeboats to take care of every person on board until other ships, summoned by wireless, can reach the scene of a disaster. Third, that the transatlantic sailing route for passenger steamships should be shifted so far south as to be entirely beyond the track of floating icebergs.?

For a collection of articles from 1912 on the Titanic disaster, including editorials, an overview of the ship and safety issues, a plan for carrying more lifeboats, and the science of icebergs, see www.ScientificAmerican.com/apr2012/titanic

Blood Doping
?Sir Edwin Ray Lankester has inquired if the Swedish authorities, who will have charge of the coming Olympian games, will permit a Marathon competitor to carry an oxygen tank or bag and take from it an occasional whiff during that cruel and grueling twenty-six odd miles that must be run. ?As oxygen is not a drug, but as natural an article of consumption as water, there seems to be no reason why the runner should be disqualified for refreshing himself with it, as he may with soup or water.? Sir Edwin?s proposal is amazingly unscientific in a scientist of so great reputation; and it is most unsportsmanlike.?

April 1862

Whiskey vs. Cannon
?In a recent proc?lamation Governor Brown of Georgia commands the peo?ple of that State to cease the manufac?ture of ardent spirits after the 15th of March, on pain of having their stills seized for the use of the government. The proclamation concludes as follows: ?We need more cannon with which to meet the enemy. Gun-metal used in the manu?facture of field pieces is composed of ninety parts of copper and ten of tin. The copper stills of Georgia, which are now heavy columb?iads [large-bore can?non] of destruction aimed against our own people, would, if manu?fact?ured into cannon, make many a bat?tery of six pounders, to be turned against the enemy.??

Kelly Clarkson Covers Britney Spears’ “Till The World Ends,” Hates the Gym

Kelly Clarkson delivered the ever-rare Britney Spears live cover last night in concert, belting out a rendition of the pop queen’s “Till the World Ends.”

The inaugural American Idol winner has been performing covers of other artists, a la Taylor Swift, during her Stronger tour, and Brit Brit was on tap.

“I thought this would be a fun one you’ll enjoy,” she told an L.A. crowd before singing. “I know you know this song … I expect everybody on these ‘Os!’”

Kelly did an awesome job, even if she has mixed feelings about the song.

According to TooFab, she said, “I love that song. I always get this bad taste in my mouth though … when I hear Britney Spears because usually she’s my cardio music and I frickin hate cardio! I frickin’ hate the gym … the gym can suck it!”

Indeed. Way to stick it to the treadmill!
