On Friday, a court in the Chinese city of Huizhou ruled that electronics retailer Sundan had to halt iPad sales at one of its stores, according to Ma Dongxiao, a lawyer for Chinese company Proview, which filed the legal action.

Proview, a display vendor that has filed for bankruptcy, claims to own the iPad trademark in mainland China and is demanding that Apple stop selling its tablet in the country. Proview’s legal action against Sundan is just one of the many lawsuits and complaints the company has filed to get local authorities to take action against iPad sales.

A lawyer for Sundan said on Monday the company is still waiting for a copy of the court verdict, which should arrive within two days. The company is still discussing the matter, and plans to speak with Apple. No decision has been made on whether to halt iPad sales.

Apple could not be immediately reached for comment.

Proview has also filed for a customs ban with Chinese authorities to stop exports and imports of the iPad tablet.

On Friday, Proview representative Li Su said the company would drop all action against Apple if the U.S. tech giant paid $400 million for the trademark.

The Chinese company acquired the iPad trademark in 2001. But Apple claims to have bought it in 2009 through a company it had set up, called IP Application. Proview, however, argues Apple bought the trademark rights from a Proview Taiwan subsidiary, which never had permission to sell the trademark.

Last June, a Hong Kong court ruled in favor of Apple, ordering an injunction to prevent Proview from selling the iPad trademark to another company. But in December, Apple was dealt a legal blow when a court in Shenzhen, China rejected the company’s claims to the iPad trademark. Apple is appealing the decision.

The story goes that in 1902 President Roosevelt was bear hunting in Mississippi. Months later, my mom and I visited President Roosevelt’s birthplace, which is a townhouse on East 20th Street in Manhattan. There you see the rooms in which he spent most of his childhood, along with a small museum of artifacts throughout his life, including the bloodied shirt (which he was wearing when he was shot mid-speech and continued on to finish his address before being looked at by a doctor) and one of the original hand-sewn, teddy bears. We also learned that President Roosevelt was a sickly child. He spent much of his youth in bed suffering from asthma. President Roosevelt’s sickly beginnings are ironic given he spent so much of his adult life as an accomplished outdoors-man, eventually dying of malaria after a river expedition to South America. In order to pay homage to President Roosevelt’s sickly beginnings, the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) started a Teddy Bear Gift Program, which gives children in hospitals teddy bears.

My mom, Sharon Bush, and I started a company called Teddy Share in 2008. Its mission is to educate and empower children to share with the world and support children’s causes. After learning about the TRA’s Teddy Bear Gift Program, we felt compelled to help and went to the Ronald McDonald House in New York City to see the program in action. There we met children who were suffering from a variety of ailments and illnesses, all playing bingo with their families by their sides. My mom and I, along with the other volunteers, were able to play bingo with the kids and help pass out teddy bears. The kids lit up when they received their cuddly new friends!

Through these experiences we were inspired to do more and worked with our other Teddy Share teammate Alexandra Weininger to create the ‘Teddy for 2′ Bear. For every teddy bear sold, another identical teddy bear is given to a child in a hospital. So this President’s Day weekend, I would like to remember President ‘Teddy’ Roosevelt, and pay homage to his many legacies — the teddy bear being one of them. Researchers from King’s College London have provided the first experimental evidence confirming a great British mathematician’s theory of how biological patterns such as tiger stripes or leopard spots are formed.

The study, funded by the Medical Research Council and to be published online in Nature Genetics, not only demonstrates a mechanism which is likely to be widely relevant in vertebrate development, but also provides confidence that chemicals called morphogens, which control these patterns, can be used in regenerative medicine to differentiate stem cells into tissue.

The findings provide evidence to support a theory first suggested in the 1950s by famous code-breaker and mathematician Alan Turing, whose centenary falls this year. He put forward the idea that regular repeating patterns in biological systems are generated by a pair of morphogens that work together as an ‘activator’ and ‘inhibitor’.

To test the theory the researchers studied the development of the regularly spaced ridges found in the roof of the mouth in mice. Carrying out experiments in mouse embryos, the team identified the pair of morphogens working together to influence where each ridge will be formed. These chemicals controlled each other’s expression, activating and inhibiting production and therefore controlling the generation of the ridge pattern.

The researchers were able to identify the specific morphogens involved in this process FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor) and Shh (Sonic Hedgehog so-called because laboratory fruit flies lacking the fly version have extra bristles on their bodies). They showed that when these morphogens’ activity is increased or decreased, the pattern of the ridges in the mouth palate are affected in ways predicted by Turing’s equations. For the first time the actual morphogens involved in this process have been identified and the team were able to see exactly the effects predicted by Turing’s 60-year-old speculative theory.

Dr Jeremy Green from the Department of Craniofacial Development at King’s Dental Institute said: ‘Regularly spaced structures, from vertebrae and hair follicles to the stripes on a tiger or zebrafish, are a fundamental motif in biology. There are several theories about how patterns in nature are formed, but until now there was only circumstantial evidence for Turing’s mechanism. Our study provides the first experimental identification of an activator-inhibitor system at work in the generation of stripes in this case, in the ridges of the mouth palate.

‘Although important in feeling and tasting food, ridges in the mouth are not of great medical significance. However, they have proven extremely valuable here in validating an old theory of the activator-inhibitor model first put forward by Alan Turing in the 50s.

‘Not only does this show us how patterns such as stripes are formed, but it provides confidence that these morphogens (chemicals) can be used in future regenerative medicine to regenerate structure and pattern when differentiating stem cells into other tissues.

‘As this year marks Turing’s centenary, it is a fitting tribute to this great mathematician and computer scientist that we should now be able to prove that his theory was right all along!’
