What makes people set up their own business?

Is it a need to be in control of their own destiny?, or the possibility of earning more money?, or perhaps the ability to manage their own time?, or maybe simply a belief that they can do better than their own bosses?

Whatever the reason, an increasing number of people take the plunge and ?go it alone?, or with some other like-minded people.? The fact is, 80% of new business ventures fail within 2 years.? Why?, because many business owners do not know exactly where they are going, or how to get there, or even, what they will do when they get there.

The initial phase of the journey is easy: heads down, work hard and fight to survive.? This is a little like battling your way through the jungle with a machete but no compass.? You could easily go round in circles and not know it.? If you could raise yourself up above the jungle on a rope, you could see where you have been, and it makes it easier to see your destination, and make decisions about where that destination should be.? You can even see the terrain ahead so that you plan the easiest, or most scenic route.

This is Strategic planning.? A typical planning cycle is five years; straight away we can see the difference between this and an Operational planning cycle which can be as short as one day, but is seldom longer than one year.

Week 9 of the Apprentice and only 8 remain. Tonight?s task was to raise awareness of English sparkling wine by creating a new image, website and online campaign and then making a pitch to a group of industry big-wigs. An interesting task but not one with many sales lessons so most of tonight?s learning was of the common sense variety!

Team leaders for the task were Ricky and Tom. Both split their teams in two to get through the multitude of tasks, Tom hilariously deciding to go on a booze up with wine newbie Adam whilst leaving Nick and Jade to deliver the goods. Amazingly they both stuck up for him in the boardroom too although how long that would have lasted had they lost I am not sure.

Over on the other team, Ricky was pretty switched on apart from the fact that he left Stephen and Jenna far too much rope to hang themselves (and maybe him). They came up with a name, Grandeur (by my schoolboy reckoning, French for ?size?), which was totally inappropriate. Or maybe they meant delusions of? which might just as easily apply to several of the Apprentii, past and present.

Anyway, after making videos and websites both teams pitched to a board of 6 wine experts (I think they call them winos). Given I know no-one who would order English sparkling wine instead of Champagne it could be argued that they should have all been French experts but none the less, from what we saw, Ricky made a really credible presentation only to be let down by Jenna and Stephen?s comedy video. The other team presentation was good too, although not as polished as Ricky?s.

So what did we learn tonight?

Everyone has common sense but not everyone uses it.

People like to think that success starts with brilliance but more often than not it starts with common sense? applied well and delivered on consistently. All respect to Tesco, but looking for a wine expert in one makes little sense Stephen? and neither does trying to raise the profile of English wine over French and then giving it a French name!

Spend your time productively.

Because most people don?t. Plenty of people are busy. Plenty of people have plenty to do. And plenty of people never stop. But most do not spend their time productively.

Sad? but true.

Even though Tom won tonight?s task, his strategy of spending the majority of the all important first day touring vineyards, wine tasting and generally getting a bit squiffy was not time well spent. There were essential website, marketing and branding activities going on and he was half way down a glass of bubbly!

Which leads me on to?

If you?re going to be a leader, LEAD!

Despite the fact that Nick and Jade just got on with it they were left with little or no direction, little or no management and little or no feedback. If what we saw was representative of the day it would be unfair to call Tom a bad project leader? he just wasn?t one.

When I meet delegates at sales seminars or at motivational talks many tell me that they feel that they do not get enough direction, support and feedback. Many tell me that they do not get enough praise or enough reward and that they only see / hear from their leaders when things go wrong?

Bit like The Apprentice boardroom then!

Make sure you hold to your brand ideals.

What lost Ricky the task tonight more than anything tonight was the fact that he trusted Stephen and Jenna to deliver a video which was funny, classy and not cheesy. They delivered on only one of these? and it probably would have gone nicely with a glass of wine.

?Quality! Quality! Quality!? Ricky had said, quite rightly, but this did not get delivered upon. If your brand ideals are important to you then you need to ensure that everybody lives, breathes and delivers on them. Your brand is only as good as your weakest link.

In the Boardroom?

I wasn?t convinced that either campaign would encourage people to ditch their Dom Perignon, banish the Bollinger or jack in the Jacquart and I don?t think Tom himself deserved to win although half of his team did get on with the task in hand.?So Ricky was back in the boardroom as a losing PM for the second time. He elected to bring back Stephen and Jenna. Personally, I would have sacked Stephen? but Lord Sugar had other ideas.

The Brazilian, who set up Facebook with Mark Zuckerberg and two other friends at Harvard in 2004, has given up his dual US citizenship and plans to settle in Singapore, where he drives a Bentley and frequents exclusive clubs.

As documented in the Oscar-winning film “The Social Network”, the 30-year-old provided the business acumen and Zuckerberg the software expertise when they created what became the world’s most popular website.

The friends had a spectacular falling out when Saverin’s stake in the company was heavily diluted. But his remaining stake is enough to give a hefty boost to his riches when Facebook lists on the stock market on Friday.

Critics say that Saverin renounced his US passport to escape paying capital gains tax on his fortune, estimated at $3.4 billion by the website “Who Owns Facebook?”, which says he retains a 4.0 percent stake.

Such a fortune would make the media-shy Saverin one of the wealthiest individuals in Singapore, Southeast Asia’s technological and financial hub where he can enjoy a degree of privacy impossible in the United States.

In a rare interview with the New York Times, he insisted: “This had nothing to do with taxes. I was born in Brazil, I was an American citizen for about 10 years. I thought of myself as a global citizen.”

His New York-based spokesman Tom Goodman declined to state Saverin’s exact Facebook stake and also insisted that tax concerns were not the reason for his decision to become a long-term resident in Singapore.

“He believes that Singapore is at the centre of the ‘it’ zone for growth, especially in relation to consumer technology, with an Internet and mobile base that is fast expanding and growing in dominance worldwide,” Goodman told AFP.

“He also plans to invest in Brazilian and global companies that have strong interests in entering the Asian markets,” he said.

Singapore does not have a capital gains tax. The city-state’s highest earners are taxed at 20 percent, much lower than the top marginal rate of 35 percent levied for federal income tax in the United States.

Saverin, whose blessings and money are avidly sought by Singapore’s technology entrepreneurs, rarely appears at public events.

People who have met Saverin say he is private and unassuming, but approachable.

He has been photographed in the company of attractive women including beauty queen Rachel Kum, Singapore’s representative in the Miss Universe contest in 2009.

In the New York Times interview, Saverin denied reports that he was living a playboy lifestyle in Singapore.

“It’s a misperception, especially the playboy,” he said. “I do have a Bentley. I do go out. I’d rather not go into personal details.

“I’m clearly very busy,” he added, with “friends, family, existing investments”.

Singapore-based web start-up Perx is one of several companies that have benefited from Saverin’s attention.

According to its co-founder Andrew Roth, Saverin invested in the company last year and advised on the development of its iPhone app — a virtual loyalty card that rewards repeat customers at restaurants, shops and other establishments.

It now has 40,000 registered users in Singapore.

“He is increasingly getting more involved on the product side, and with his world view and knowledge about the region, he has offered us valuable feedback on how to improve,” Roth told AFP.

Anideo, a Singapore-based company best known for its video-stream application Denso, is another of Saverin’s Asian ventures.

Saverin mixes with young Singaporeans and expatriates.

“He hobnobs more with the investors,” said Terence Lee, an editor at a local technology website who has spotted Saverin at start-up events.

“I think anyone can go up to him to say hi.”

Saverin joins other rich and famous people who have made Singapore their home, benefiting from its low taxes, safe environment and paparazzi-free culture.

“Everybody is rushing to buy the U.S. dollar. A strong dollar is negative for gold for the time being,” said Ronald Leung, director of Lee Cheong Gold Dealers in Hong Kong, adding that demand from jewelers was limited due to volatile prices.

“Jewelers don’t know what to do. Maybe when the price has stabilized at some level, they will start to re-enter the market. There’s a bit of scale-down buying.”

Spot gold was down $13.34 at $1,530.76 an ounce by 2:39 a.m. EDT, having hit an intraday low of $1,529.43.

Gold rallied to a record of around $1,920 an ounce in 2011, when investors flocked to the metal as a safe haven during the debt crisis in Europe. But bullion is moving with riskier assets this year as investors turn to the safety of the dollar and the euro hits multi-month lows.

“It’s risk aversion caused by concerns about Greece. Tokyo stock exchange also fell today, so everybody requires the dollar,” said a bullion dealer in Tokyo, adding that investors cashed in gold to cover losses in other markets.

Money managers in gold futures and options slashed their net long positions by 20 percent to the lowest level since December 2008, as investors aggressively unwound their bullish bets in the precious metal after a sharp price pullback.

The euro hit a four-month low on Wednesday, a day after Greece called a new election that may hand victory to leftists opposed to the terms of an EU bailout and raise the risk of the country exiting the euro zone.

Party leaders will convene at the presidential palace at 2 p.m. (1100 GMT), but said they had little hope President Karolos Papoulias’s offer would resolve a political crisis that has fuelled speculation Greece’s days in the euro zone are numbered.

In equity markets, the Nikkei lost 1.1 percent, while MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> extended losses for the fourth consecutive day, sliding nearly 3 percent to a new 4-month low.

In the physical market in Singapore, jewelry makers from Thailand snapped up gold on the lower prices, while buyers from top consumer India could also return after buying some gold overnight.

“Definitely physical buying has gone up, although demand is not overwhelming. Indonesia has slowed down because there’s a public holiday tomorrow, while Thailand is buying,” said a dealer in Singapore.

“India did buy gold last night. They are not really in the market yet today, but I am sure they will be buying.”

The wedding season is underway in India and will taper off by the end of the month. Gold jewelry is an essential part of the dowry Indian parents give to their daughters at weddings.
